8 Million $ Mistake!

Recently, the Dallas Cowboy’s released Terrell Owens from their roster. Owens was due to earn over $8 million this season, and is considered to be one of the best receivers in the game. However, when the Cowboys considered the talent T.O. brings on the field, with the character issues, and drama he brings off the field, they were willing to take a $9 million dollar hit against their salary cap this year!

What does that say about your character if someone is willing to pay $9 million dollars to separate themselves from you! We are now living in a time where people don’t just care about how good you are at your job. People want to know how good you are as a person! Your character will either open doors for you, or be an obstacle for people in deciding whether to work with you or not.

Proverbs 22:1 states, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.”

There are some things in life that money can’t buy. Your name and character will take you farther than just being talented alone. Realize your gifts, talents and abilities open a door for you, but your character will determine if the door stays open!

Watch T.O’s timeline from the NFL Network…

With successful, high paid athletes like Terrell Owens, or Stephon Marsbury making public statements among other things to bring attention to themselves, it makes it difficult for parents and coaches of middle and high schools to emphasize the message of TEAM. When young people see some of the most successful people in athletics acting selfishly, and demanding attention or “the ball”, it is only natural for some young people to think that that is what they need to do in order to make it.

As ESPN College GameDay analyst, Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend!”

What you may not realize is that athletes that are proven to be highly selfish at the high school level, seldom get recruited by the big name schools. Why? Because who wants to deal with the drama? Even NFL teams are grading “character” as just as valuable as the 40 time. (Exhibit A: Pacman Jones, enough said)

The things that you should be known for are the things you are able to on the field, and when they look at the person off of it. That school or team should be blown away, because you will add character and quality to their program.

Don’t worry, if you are good…people will find you.

The Game within the Game

Many young athletes focus only on one small part of the game they play.  Usually they focus only on the execution of an assignment during a game, and fail to realize there is more to winning a game than just the x’s and o’s.

As an athlete, you must understand that your individual matchup against the person guarding you is just as much a part of the game as you knowing what route to run, or who to block.  Ask yourself some questions about the person you are playing against:

  • are they passive or physical?
  • do they rely on their speed or strength?
  • what are they good at?
  • what gets them frustrated?

The answer to questions like these can give you a winning edge during the game, and help you execute when it really matters the most!
